Privacy concerns are raised again for Facebook users as the company has revealed a major security flaw in the way users passwords are stored. 

Main worries are about access to personal data (84%), tracking (57%), hackers (57%) and privacy breaches (55%)

72% believe children should learn in school how to properly choose and use apps

Despite privacy concerns, 40% say the Government and insurance companies should have access to health apps to improve healthcare system



Facebook has revealed that is has fixed a major security flaw after they discovered passwords of hundreds of millions of it users were being stored in a readable unencrypted manner on its internal systems that potentially could be accessed by Facebook employees. Facebook faces increasing pressure from the public of privacy and security following a string of data breaches.

A nationally representative survey of 1001 people carried out by iReach Insights has found that major worries cited by respondents all relate to issues of security and privacy. 93% of smartphone users in Ireland use apps, and that just over one in three (36%) people are concerned about apps. Of those concerned about apps (36%), adults in Ireland are concerned with access to personal data (84%), tracking (57%), hackers (57%) and privacy breaches (55%) the top replies. 

Interestingly, despite the clear concerns around the privacy of personal data, 40% of people in Ireland say the Government and insurance companies should have access to user data from health and fitness apps in order to improve the Irish health system and to create specific health programmes.

For 62%, the progress in app technology offers more advantages than disadvantages, with an even higher proportion of younger people (18-34-year-olds) at 71% who are positive about advancement of smartphone and tablet apps.

72% of those asked believe that children and teenagers should learn in school how to properly choose and use apps.
