Reach Insights Press Release
5th March 2019
More than one in three people in Ireland are worried about
smartphone apps, with security the major cause for concern as Facebook criticised
once again for user data usage
Main
worries are about access to personal data (84%), tracking (57%), hackers (57%)
and privacy breaches (55%)
72%
believe children should learn in school how to properly choose and use apps
Despite
privacy concerns, 40% say the Government and insurance companies should have
access to health apps to improve healthcare system
Last week
Facebook were found to have spied on users via a private network application by
a British Parliament Committee. The report stated that Facebook violated data
privacy laws and that as of November 2013, more than 5,000 apps could gain
special access to user data and the data of those user’s Facebook friends.
A nationally
representative survey of 1001 people carried out by iReach has found that 93%
of smartphone users in Ireland use apps, and that just over one in three (36%) people
are concerned about apps.
The major
worries cited by respondents all relate to issues of security and privacy, with
access to personal data (84%), tracking (57%), hackers (57%) and privacy
breaches (55%) the top replies.
Interestingly,
despite the clear concerns around the privacy of personal data, 40% of people
in Ireland say the Government and insurance companies should have access to
user data from health and fitness apps in order to improve the Irish health
system and to create specific health programmes.
For 62%, the
progress in app technology offers more advantages than disadvantages, with an
even higher proportion of younger people (18-34-year-olds) at 71% who are
positive about advancement of smartphone and tablet apps.
72% of those
asked believe that children and teenagers should learn in school how to
properly choose and use apps.
