59% of adults in Northern Ireland plan to go on holidays this year.


Airplanes (81%) and hotels (77%) the most popular mode of transit and accommodation

The top two destinations to travel abroad are Spain (34%) and England (19%)

68% of people believe there is increased financial pressure when it comes to summer and planning holidays

The average amount (30%) spent on holidays each year is between €500-€1,000


With summer weather just around the corner, summer and holidays are on the mind of everyone in Northern Ireland. With this in mind, iReach Insights conducted a nationally representative survey about holiday plans on 406 adults in Northern Ireland.

59% of Northern Ireland (NI) adults plan to go on holidays this year. 24% of NI adults have visited 1-3 countries, while 28% have visited 4-6 countries. Only 9% have visited more than 16 countries. 52% of NI adults travel once a year. NI adults over the age of 55 are three times more likely (24%) to travel at least three times a year compared to 18-34 year-olds (8%).

85% of adults in Northern Ireland travel in Europe, 71% within Ireland, and 37% in North America. This year, 65% of adults plan to go abroad for their summer holidays, with the top two most popular destinations being Spain (34%) and England (19%). 11% of adults plan to spend time both in Ireland and abroad.

Of the 24% planning on spending their summer holidays only in Ireland, the top destinations were: 1. Donegal (35%), Dublin (33%), and Antrim (24%). The most popular activities for those staying in Ireland were: 1. Travel through Ireland (69%), 2. Go to the beach (46%), and 3. Visit family and friends (35%).

The most popular methods for travel were: 1. Air plane (81%), 2. Car (42%), and 3. Train (31%). The most popular accommodations upon arrival to the travel destination were: 1. Hotel (77%), 2. Apartment (33%), and 3. B&Bs (20%).

The average amount spent on holidays each year in Northern Ireland is between €500-€1,000 (30%), with 15% of people spending under €500 and 20% spending between €1,000-€2,000. Men (40%) are twice as likely to spend €2000 or more on their yearly holidays than women (21%). 68% of people believe there is increased financial pressure when it comes to summer and planning holidays
