The official summer start is the 21st of June. The
long-awaited summer months are no longer too far away. With this in mind, iReach
Insights conducted a nationally representative survey on 1,001 adults in
Ireland on their summer holiday plans and general travel preferences.
This research reveals that 93% of the adults in
Ireland go on holiday at least once a year. As a result of this high travel
rate, the majority (59%) have already been to more than 7 different countries.
Top 5 most travelled destinations are 1. Europe (95%), 2. Ireland (78%), 3.
North America (55%), 4. Asia (26%) and 5. Africa (21%). Furthermore, the
majority of Irish travellers chooses to stay in a hotel (82%). Less popular but
also common accommodations are rented apartments (39%), accommodations of
relatives (22%), Airbnb offers (18%), and rented villa/houses (18%). On average
the adults in Ireland spend over €2500 on holiday each year, with their travel expenses amounting to almost €9 Billion. This is accompanied by 54% feeling an
increased financial pressure when it comes to planning holidays.
With regard to this upcoming summer, 70% of the adults
in Ireland are planning to go on a summer holiday. Among those, the majority
(63%) are going to spend their holiday vacation abroad, only 14% are planning
to stay in Ireland and 23% are considering both.
Top 5 favourite summer destinations abroad are: 1.
Spain (35%), 2. Portugal (18%), 3. England (15%), 4. Italy (10%), and 5.
America (9%). Compared to 2018, America has
increased in popularity and has replaced France from rank 5. Within Ireland, Top 5 travel destinations are: 1. Galway (34%), 2. Kerry (32%), 3. Dublin (24%), 4. Cork (23%), 5. Mayo (17%). In
contrast to last year, Louth is no more among the top 5 travel destinations and
has been replaced by Mayo.
While on summer vacation, most people plan to travel
through Ireland (65%), go to the beach (45%), visit family and friends (45%),
do some house/garden work they normally wouldn’t have time for (21%) or simply
stay at home (12%). 44% will travel with family, 30% with their life partner
and 21% with friends. Only 5% will travel alone.
Furthermore, we asked our participants what they enjoy
about holidays. These are the top 5 activities: 1. Relaxing (77%), 2. Eating out (62%), 3.
Visiting tourist attractions (61%), 4. Break from work (53%), 5. Going to the
beach (44%).
